Petroleum Sludge treatment

Crude Oil Sludge from Petroleum storage tank bottom are categorized as Hazardous Wastes under Environmental rules across the world. These sludge waste containing mixtures of Oil, water and solids, cannot be disposed off as landfill, even if they are de-oiled unless they are totally remediated.

Petroleum Sludge

The term "Oil Sludge" is used, in general, to designate waste generated due to storage of crude/products, containing mixtures of Oil, water and solids. The ratio of different phases, fluctuates depending upon the origin of the crude oil, or location of the accumulation.

Sludge from Refineries and Installations can be from

a) Crude Oil  and b) Petro products

It can further be categorized as:

1. Storage Tank bottom Sludge   2. Lagoon spillover Sludge   3. Landfill Sludge

Crude Oil Sludge from storage tank bottom are categorized as Hazardous Wastes under Environmental rules across the world.  These sludge waste containing mixtures of Oil, water and solids cannot be disposed off as landfill, even if they are de-oiled unless they are totally remediated.

In Conventional process, the equipment used for extraction of oil include decanters, tricanters, centrifuges and hydro cyclones as the per the process design. Large quantities of solvents are required for these operations. The cost of plant, machinery, solvents, and operations are very high for this process. The recovery method is adopted only if the sludge quantities are in thousands of cubic meters.

ERS Process for Oil Recovery from Petroleum Sludge.

  • High-capacity pumps shall be utilized for transporting collected oily sludge over significant distances.
  • Microbes in ERS break down the structure of emulsion and water, after which Oil is separated during fermentation process.
  • Water is evaporated in the drying process
  • After being drained from ERS, impurities are filtered away from Oil
  • Oil shall still stay attached to impurities which is further separated by washing with steam in a specialized tank.
  • To enable final solids to be further treated for complete removal all traces of oils, chemicals and moisture acquired from steam, it is once again processed by ERS
  • The sludge shall be totally remediated and stripped of the oil & grease content. The heavy metals present at the beginning were non detectable and the concentration of other metals have shall be reduced. The leftover sludge would be converted to manure, rich with organic carbon and other soil nutrients.
  • The main ERS unit operates at a maximum temperature of 65°C which is sufficient for treatment purposes. The system essentially removes all oil from solids and water.
  • In view of the very large quantities of accumulated sludge in the refineries, the value of recovered oil is substantially high and thus profitable to the refineries.
