Dredged sludge treatment
Sludge is semi-solid slurry that causes environmental disruption. Presence of Sludge causes environment to become anaerobic. It causes hydrogen sulphine gas which is deadly for human beings. Sludge draws out oxygen from water bodies above thereby lowering DO levels which can cause fish kills. Sludge also stores pathogens which affects public health.

Sludge is a mixture of organic waste and sediments. It spreads through outy the water body, more towards the center. In many lakes and drains, the ledge depth may be more than water depth.

However, discarding and covering up dredging sludge may bring environmental problem. How to use and dispose Sludge silt is a crucial problem to be paid close attention in countries. ERS has been utilized for Sludge treatment in Gunma Prefecture, Japan. Dredged silty sludge from ponds and lakes in Ehime Prefecture, Japan is also treated by ERS. Organics in the sludge is decomposed by microbes, thereby reducing the volume of sludge further.  A reduction of radioactive material can be expected due to microbial action. The sludge, once fermented and dried, results in pelleted organics which is further sieved to segregate inorganic waste
Cleaning the Ganges - India's most sacred and polluted river.


Cleaning the Ganges is expected to cost US $ 12 Billion. As part of the plan to promote the Ganges as a waterway for commercial activities, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is set to start dredging the 1,600-km stretch between Varanasi and Haldia, on the banks of the Hooghly, in West Bengal. In the first phase, the IWAI will start dredging between Varanasi and Patna to remove 3.25 lakh cubic metres of sludge.
ERS speeds up the biodegradation of all organic matter in the dredged sludge and alters the pH level is the sludge thereby decreasing the release of heavy metals and other inorganic contaminants.
Depending on physical and chemical quality, all the dredged material is treated and later reused as soil conditioner, raw material for cement or aggregate for cement and also as water purification agent.
 
While biological processes for processing river bed and dam sludge are still under development around the world, ERS promises tremendous potential in this sector, since it is of low cost. Sludge Silt becomes aggregated structure with microbes. The volume of sludge silt is reduced, which can be recycled.
